Never Fond of Saying Goodbye

Isaac, Dan, Casey, Jeremy, Kim, Sam, Dave, Chris, Will, and Elliott are sitting at the table in the conference room.

Sam: Why didn't I know about Dana?

Casey: I found out just before my interview-

Sam: And you didn't tell anybody?

Casey: I'm telling everybody right now.

Sam: You had knowledge that we we're going to be down two producers and you didn't think it was important enough to let me know?

Casey: In reflection... no.

Isaac: Gentlemen, we can handle this. I'll call Sally and let her know about being down Dana and Natalie. I'm sure she'll pitch in and help out. We've bailed out "West Coast Update" in the past; they can help return the favor.

Sam: The fact remains-

Isaac: End of discussion, Sam.

Sam: All right.

Isaac: What have we got today?

Jeremy: We were planning on running the feature on Giambi, but we may need to push that back for breaking news from the Yankees camp.

Dan: My people say the Yankees deal isn't going to happen, so I think we'll be able to use it.

Kim: We'll use some leeway on that.

Isaac: Good.

Casey: LeClair signed with the Titans, so we'll add that to the football report.

Sam: Break up the football report. Put LeClair and the Buccaneers in the 20's, and do the rest in the 40's.

Dan: What about spring training?

Sam: Nudge it up to the 30's because some of the pitchers are getting their last start before the regular season.

Isaac: Good. I think we will be all right this evening.

Natalie, Nathan, and Nicole are dressed appropriately inside the funeral home.

Natalie: I don't think I want to do this.

Nathan: None of us do.

Natalie: I don't want the last image of my father be one of him lying in a casket.

Nicole: It's a chance to make peace, Nat.

Natalie: I don't know if I can do it. (pause) Where's mom?

Nicole: She's in the restroom.

The three stand quietly for a moment.

Nathan: I'm glad we got here before everyone else.

Nicole: Yeah.

Lillian enters the room.

Natalie: Mom, are you all right?

Lillian: I'll be fine. Let's go.

Lillian holds out her hand and Natalie takes it. Nathan puts his arm around Nicole. The four walk together into another room.

-----

Dan and Casey are in their office. Dan holds up a memo.

Dan: What's this?

Casey: Sam has come up with a new rule.

Dan: It's stupid.

Casey: Tell me about it.

Dan: We can't date other CSC employees?

Casey: That's what it says.

Dan: Isn't this a bit hypocritical?

Casey: Maybe Sam and Jo aren't dating.

Dan: No... no... wait... maybe.

Dan smiles.

Casey: Dana isn't going to be happy.

Dan: What are you going to do?

Casey: Before or after she kills Sam?

Dan: Does Isaac know about this?

Casey: I think there is a lot Isaac doesn't know.

Dan: Casey.

Casey: Hey, all I'm saying is that the Isaac Jaffe I know would not let this happen. We are all good at what we do. We don't need some asinine memo telling us we can't socialize with each other.

Dan: I'm going to Isaac.

Casey: I tried. He's in a meeting with J.J.

Dan: J.J.?

Casey: Yeah.

Dan: Good.

Dan gets up and leaves the office.

-----

Jeremy hangs up the telephone at his desk. Elliott and Kim are standing next to him.

Elliott: Well?

Jeremy: The flowers got there in time. Natalie said they were beautiful.

Kim: Good.

Jeremy: I let her know we also made a donation to the American Heart Association.

Elliott: How is she doing?

Jeremy: She said she is still in shock, but she wants to speak with me when she gets back.

Kim: There you go, Jeremy.

Jeremy: It may not be a positive sign. I have a feeling she's going to let her emotions directly come out at me.

-----

Dan knocks on Sam's door.

Sam: Yeah?

Dan: Hey, Sam. I just read your memo.

Sam: It was something Isaac and I talked about. I decided it needed to be done.

Dan: All CSC employees?

Sam: With the projected rumors about people moving around the network, I felt it was best to eliminate any possible conflicts.

Dan: Okay. You do realize Jo works for CSC?

Sam: Who's Jo?

Dan: The woman you've been dating.

Sam: She is?

Dan: Hey, we saw you two the other night walking into Anthony's.

Sam: Who?

Dan: You and Jo.

Sam: No, who saw me?

Dan: Well, me, Casey, and Jeremy.

Sam: And you are sure it was me?

Dan: We had a pretty good look.

Sam: It wasn't me.

Dan: Sam, you can't institute this policy if you are going to break it.

Sam: And I'm saying it wasn't me; and I don't know of anyone who is named Jo.

Dan: She saw you a couple of days ago. Blonde hair, nicely done, technical support, and fixes gadgets here.

Sam: Oh, the fix-it lady.

Dan: Yeah.

Sam: My remote was broken. She came and fixed it. You thought we were dating?

Dan: Well... yeah.

Sam: You've been getting your information from Casey?

Dan: Not all of it.

Sam: Don't worry about me. You need to be concerned about yourself. I wouldn't institute a policy if I couldn't follow it myself.

Dan: Okay. And this is occurring company wide?

Sam: Isaac is going to present it to the people upstairs, but for right now the policy only affects "Sports Night."

Dan shakes his head and starts to leave.

Dan: Sam, is this to get back at Dana?

Sam: Excuse me?

Dan: Dana and Casey. Are you trying to break them up?

Sam: Why would I need to do that?

Dan: I don't know.

Sam: Besides, I think they'll do a fine job breaking up without me getting involved.

Dan: Yeah? You really think that?

Sam: I have a hunch.

Dan shakes his head and leaves the room.

-----

Dana is sound asleep on her couch when there is a loud knock on her door. Dana rolls over and there is a second round of knocking. Dana carefully sits up.

Dana: sniff Oh, please, go away.

There is more knocking.

Dana stands up slowly and shuffles out to her front door.

Dana: Who's there?

"Dana? Can I come in?"

Dana unlocks the door and opens it while steadying herself against the doorjamb.

Dana: Hi. sniff

Casey takes Dana's arm to help steady her.

Casey: Hey. You look awful.

Dana: Thanks. cough You really know how to charm a girl, don't you?

Casey walks in and leads Dana back to her couch.

Casey: Here, sit down.

Dana sits on the couch.

Dana: AH-CHOO!!!   sniff   What are you doing here?

Casey: Bless you. I'm making sure you are okay.

Dana notices Casey setting a bag down.

Dana: What's in the bag?

Casey: Chicken soup. You want some?

Dana smiles lightly and closes her eyes.

Dana: Yeah.

Casey: Okay. You just lie there and rest.

Dana nods and then she lies back down.

Casey: Good girl.

Casey gets up and walks into Dana's kitchen.

You hear cupboard doors opening and closing, and dishes clanging around as Casey searches for a pot. The noise stops and Casey comes back into the living room.

Casey: Dana, where are your-

Casey stops and smiles as he sees Dana has fallen back asleep on her couch. Casey goes back into the kitchen.

-----

Dan walks into JoAnne's office.

Dan: Okay, who are you dating?

JoAnne: You seemed to be avoiding that question.

Dan: I just would like to know.

JoAnne: You didn't want to know last night.

Dan: I thought you were dating Sam.

JoAnne: Sam?

JoAnne laughs.

JoAnne: You know, I didn't think about Sam. By the way you talk about him, I probably should consider dating him.

Dan: The name? A name? Who is he?

JoAnne: His name is Josh.

Dan: Josh... Josh... it kinda' rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?

JoAnne: Are you okay with it?

Dan: Yeah. Is it serious?

JoAnne: We've gone out twice. I don't know if I'm even going to like him in a month.

Dan: So we'll just wait and see.

JoAnne: It doesn't mean I don't care for you any less.

Dan: I know. I'll see you later.

Dan starts to leave.

Dan: By the way, you look really beautiful today. New outfit?

JoAnne: Thank you, yes it is.

Dan: It makes your eyes really stand out.

JoAnne: Thank you. I'll see you later.

Dan leaves the office.

-----

Dana starts coughing and sits back up. She puts her hand to her chest and groans. Casey is sitting next to her and holding her warm bowl of soup.

Dana: I've been coughing so hard. I think I pulled muscles or something.

Casey: Poor baby. Here you go.

Dana takes a deep breath.

Dana: The soup smells good.

Casey takes the bowl and brings it closer to Dana. Dana takes the bowl from him.

Dana: Thanks, Casey.

Dana takes the spoon and starts to slowly eat. Casey moves the pillows around to make Dana more comfortable.

Dana: Thank you. The soup is good. sniff You didn't have to do this.

Casey: Shhh. Eat, Dana. I'll be checking back with you after the show, okay? You'll be all right by yourself?

Dana: I'm a grown woman, Casey.

Casey: I'll see you later.

Casey kisses his finger tips, then places his hand on Dana's cheek. Dana smiles at Casey.

Natalie and her relatives are all seated in the church. Her father's casket is beside them. Natalie, Nathan, and Nicole are whispering to each other.

Natalie: I probably should go to church more often.

Nathan: Yeah.

Nicole: It's beautiful in here.

Natalie: Well, dad never turned us into Catholics.

Nicole: Yeah.

The priest comes forward.

Priest: Let's all say a few prayers for our dearly departed, Hank.

Everyone kneels down in their pews. They join together in prayer.

Priest: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done...

Jeremy feels his tie to make sure it is straightened out. Jeremy is dressed up and is quietly following a group of people up a sidewalk and toward a building. When the group reaches the front door, a gentleman holds the door for them as they enter the building, a synagogue.

Sam is busily typing away at his computer in his office. He stops for a second to take a sip of coffee from his mug. After he sets the mug back down, he continues typing on the keyboard.

JoAnne and Allen have taken apart camera 3 in the "Sports Night" studio. They have various pieces and wires placed around a small table, which is also holding their tool sets. The two of them hastily work together in repairing the camera, impervious to everything happening around them.

Kim is holding a clipboard and barking out orders and assignments to various staffers and crew members.

Dave, Chris, and Elliott are in the control room and doing a test run to make sure everything is working properly.

Dan stands in a dress shirt and tie. He is just off the set, and he is focusing on JoAnne. The clock behind Dan says "00:07:46" and it continues to count down, second-by-second. Elliott comes by and hands Dan a few sheets. Dan thanks Elliott and then he goes back to admiring JoAnne.

Dana is in her office and talking on the telephone. She smiles and motions somebody to come in to her office. Casey walks in and stands silently next to Dana. He quietly takes Dana's free hand and brings it up to his lips. He places a kiss on top of her hand. Dana smiles and runs her hand through Casey's hair.

Isaac is seated at a board room table. He is surrounded by other executives, including J.J. They are all discussing and exchanging ideas and opinions. Graphics can be seen in the distant wall. You can see the title "Sports Night" on top of the graphic. Isaac listens for a moment as J.J. speaks. Isaac politely objects to what J.J. has just said. A couple of executives can be seen nodding their heads, agreeing with Isaac. The rest of the executives listen stoically as Isaac continues to speak.

Lillian is sitting on her bed. She looks over toward her dresser and gazes at the black-and-white picture of her and her husband on their wedding day. She looks down at the wedding ring on her hand as tears fall down her face.

Nathan and Nicole are watching television in the living room. Both are in a zombie-like state. The television flickers and they offer no reaction.

A shower in a bathroom is turned on. Hot water immediately flows from the shower head. A shower curtain is pulled back, and you notice the face inside the shower- Natalie's.

Natalie lets the water run over top of her head. She reaches up and massages her head and lets the water seep into her hair. She pulls her hands away and drops her head. Her head slightly moves up and down and her breathing becomes deeper. She covers her face with her hands. Natalie begins to wail.
